LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The average total cost of a state worker was $122,811 with nearly 40% of that related to non-salary obligations, according to the state of Michigan’s most recent report.

The average salary of a state worker was $74,917 in 2023-24 but the additional $47,894 was “additional payroll cost” that included things such as insurance, workers’ compensation, payroll taxes, unemployment and retirement and pension costs.

In Michigan, the median household income was $71,149, according to the U.S. Census.

In 2019-20, when the pandemic first hit and governments received a huge infusion of federal money in the form of pandemic relief, the average salary of a state employee was $63,772. When adjusted for inflation, that 2019-20 salary increases to $77,718.
