LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Michigan classrooms may soon bring back the art of cursive, thanks to a bill introduced by State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) aiming to restore cursive reading and writing to the curriculum.

House Bill 4675 directs the Michigan Department of Education to develop programs ensuring students learn cursive handwriting and reading—skills many say are fading but remain essential. Carter called it a “commonsense step” that links students not only to everyday tasks like signing their names but also to the nation’s founding documents.

Specifically, her goal is to “ensure our students aren’t left behind when it comes to a skill that connects them to both practical tasks and our shared history and culture.”

In fact, this is not her first time championing the effort: Carter has pushed the bill through three terms, winning bipartisan support along the way.
