LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Bed bugs aren’t just a nuisance, they’re a full-blown invasion in parts of Michigan. According to Orkin’s 2025 report, Detroit ranks third nationally for bed bug infestations, while Grand Rapids comes in at seventh. Flint and Lansing also made the list, sitting at 16th and 48th, respectively.
“For more than 20,000 years, bed bugs have mastered the art of going unnoticed until it’s too late,” Orkin said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “With travel-heavy months ahead, vigilance is key.”

Orkin’s ranking is based on treatment data from May 2024 through May 2025, combining residential and commercial calls. While Chicago holds onto its top spot for the fifth year in a row, Michigan’s multiple entries highlight the state’s persistent problem.
Experts like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that these tiny, blood-feeding parasites can infiltrate any place—from homes to hotels—and often travel inside bags, clothing, or used goods. Michigan State University Extension advises unpacking suitcases on hard, well-lit surfaces and laundering clothes at the hottest safe temperature. For stubborn infestations, freezing items for one to two weeks can kill all life stages of the bugs.
Signs of a bed bug problem include rusty blood spots on sheets, tiny pale eggs, shed skins, and a sweet, musty odor. Bed bug bites can cause red, itchy welts, insomnia, and anxiety—though some people show no reaction at all.
