LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A new bill from Rep. Gina Johnsen (R-Lake Odessa) aims to lift Michigan’s ban on concealed firearms inside the State Capitol, provided the carrier has a valid permit and presents it when asked.
Under current policy, the Capitol is a “weapons-free zone,” reinforced by metal detectors and enforced by the Michigan State Capitol Commission, WILX News 10 reported. Johnsen’s proposal would amend the Michigan State Capitol Historic Site Act to strip the Commission of its authority to ban lawful concealed carry in the building.

“This legislation reinforces the rights of lawful gun owners and ensures state agencies cannot arbitrarily restrict concealed carry in the people’s building,” Johnsen said.
The bill requires that licensed gun owners produce their permit upon request from Capitol security or sergeant-at-arms staff. As of now, the bill has not been scheduled for a committee hearing.
According to Johnsen, the measure “respects the Constitution while maintaining clear protocols for safety and accountability.”
