DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit is expecting to spend $7.2 million on representing indigent people in 2025-26.

Detroit is receiving a $6.1 million grant from the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission which requires a $1.1 million match from the city. The money is used to represent people without the resources to hire an attorney who appear in 36th District Court.

The city council is set to accept the grant at its July 15 meeting.

Statewide, the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission has increased its grant spending from $86.7 million grants approved in FY 2019 to $295.2 million in FY 2025.

The state legislature created The Michigan Indigent Defense Commission in 2013; in addition, it is funded by the state Legislature.
