EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) charges Michigan State University (MSU) as much as $204 an hour to have police work traffic control during college football games.

The police department charges $204.77 an hour for a lieutenant to work the Saturday games while sergeants cost $193.09 an hour and officers are billed at an hourly rate of $75.23.

According to a city memo, the work “includes traffic control at intersections surrounding the university, where vehicle and pedestrian traffic increases. ELPD Officers also assist with security and safety measures within the football stadium during the game.”

The costs reflect the employees’ fringe benefits as well as overtime and are part of a three-year agreement between the city and MSU. In 2024, that cost came to $99,000, according to the city.

Michigan State University plays six home games in East Lansing this season. The Nov. 29 game against Maryland is scheduled to be played in Detroit.
