FLINT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – It’s been a bad week for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
As scandal allegations swirl around Whitmer, a Democratic donor, and the MEDC, a pet project the administration has pushed in Genesee County is now kaput.

A semiconductor project involving Sandisk Corp. in Mundy Township is not moving forward there or anywhere else in the United States.
“Their board came to this decision amid national economic turmoil, which is at risk of worsening amid threats of even higher tariffs,” Whitmer said in a statement to media outlets. “Michigan’s Mundy Township site was the company’s preferred destination to build their massive facility.”
State Rep. Jasper Martus (D-Flushing), who represents constituents near the megasite location, blamed President Donald Trump. “Trump killed the future for my community,” he said.
Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall (R-Richland Township), said the facts don’t back up Martus’ comments. “President Trump’s bold leadership is making it easier and more attractive than ever to create jobs in America. We simply need state leaders who are focused on making sure Michigan is the best possible place to build and grow,” Hall said. Trump has been working on bringing American-made products back to the states by implementing tough tariffs on foreign goods.
This development is another blow to the Whitmer administration. She’s spent much of her second term using taxpayer dollars to incentivize Chinese companies to set up shop in Michigan. Gotion in Big Rapids and CATL in Marshall are still moving forward, but a previous megasite proposal in Clinton County got the ax after residents pushed back.
In addition, Whitmer is rumored to pursue a presidential bid in 2028, although she has not officially declared her candidacy.
