DETROIT (Michigan News Source) — A stray bullet hit a toddler, and now Detroit’s curfew is hitting back.

Following the July 5 shooting of a 2-year-old during a neighborhood fireworks gathering, city police say they are stepping up enforcement of youth curfew laws, issuing parental responsibility tickets, and expanding patrols.

Two teens are in custody in connection with the shooting, which stemmed from a fight in a nearby park, according to Chief Todd Bettison and The Detroit News.

“Injuries are minimal, but still a gunshot wound,” Bettison said. The child is expected to survive.

Now, officers say they’ll be increasing overnight patrols and start citing parents whose children violate curfew. Under city ordinance, minors 15 and under must be off public property by 10 p.m., and those 16 and 17 by 11 p.m., unless accompanied by an adult.

“This department will definitely be stepping up our efforts tremendously,” Bettison said. “Parents still have the responsibility to ensure that they know where their children are.”
