LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The number of people on Medicaid in Michigan jumped 45% from 2017 to 2023 and cost has increased nearly $6 billion during that six-year span.
The number of enrollees in Michigan has jumped from 2.11 million in 2017 to 3.07 million in 2023. The cost of the program has jumped form $17.3 billion to $23.7 billion during those six years. The federal government covered 75% of that $23.7 billion in 2023.

The federal government under the Donald Trump administration claims that state governments are “gaming” the Medicaid system to avoid making contributing money toward Medicaid services.
The data is provided by the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC), which is a non-partisan legislative branch agency.
Michigan’s 3.07 million people enrolled in Medicaid in 2023 was eighth highest in the country. California had the most at 15.2 million. Overall, there were 96.5 million people on Medicaid in the U.S. and its territories with a cost of $855.5 billion.
