LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – With 21,600 vehicles stolen in Michigan last year, state police and the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) are encouraging Michiganders to protect their vehicles from theft.

July is national vehicle theft prevention month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that more than 850,000 vehicles were stolen last year, which comes out to one vehicle being stolen every 37 seconds.

“Awareness of what is occurring in your community, on your street, is a great way to help protect yourself and your vehicle,” said Col. James F. Grady II, Director of the Michigan State Police. “Through our Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA), we remain committed to tracking motor vehicle theft, combatting these crimes, and providing financial support and grants for theft prevention teams.”

To protect vehicles from theft, people can park in well-lit parking lots and not leave the area while their vehicles are running, according to a press release.

“Vehicle theft is all too common, and even more so during the summer months, making it important for consumers to take preventative actions to protect their vehicles from theft,” DIFS Director Anita Fox said. “Locking your doors and closing windows completely, keeping valuables out of sight, and adding anti-theft systems to your vehicle can protect you from experiencing a theft and may qualify you for discounts from many insurance companies.

She added, “Talk to your insurance company or agent to make sure you are getting the discounts for which you qualify.”
