TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More information is coming forward involving the man accused of stabbing 11 people inside a Traverse City Walmart store on Saturday afternoon.

Forty-two-year-old Bradford James Gille from Afton has prior assault allegations and controlled substance violations, according to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea. Gille is being held in the Grand Traverse County Jail on 11 charges with intent to murder along with a charge of terrorism.

In addition, the Detroit News reports Gille is a diagnosed schizophrenic.

Officials said Gille used a folding knife with a 3.5-inch cutting blade during the attack. According to witness reports, Gille was in the store for about a half-an-hour before the stabbings occurred. A witness said he stabbed one person, then stabbed his way through a crowd on his way out the door.

A motive for the attack is unknown.

Meanwhile, neighboring Emmet County released a statement saying a court order issued one day before the stabbings instructed that officers take Gille into custody. The order identified Gille as homeless with no known physical address in Emmet County.

Emmet County patrols actively searched for Gille but were unable to local him in that county.

Emmet County officials said, “Regrettably, less than 24 hours after receiving this order, a tragic series of events occurred in Traverse City. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this devastating situation.”
