ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — The protests haven’t stopped, and now neither does the security.

24-hour protection.

The University of Michigan assigned 24-hour protection to its regents and top executives after months of vandalism, threats, and harassment linked to the Israel-Gaza war and campus divestment demands.

At least three regents—Jordan Acker, Mark Bernstein, and Sarah Hubbard—confirmed they are under continuous guard, according to The Detroit News. Targets included private homes, law offices, and porches strewn with bloodied dolls, spray-painted slogans, and even a jar of urine hurled through a window.

“It’s unfortunately the world that we live in these days,” Acker said. “I didn’t sign up for this job to make foreign policy or to be involved in foreign policy, and for this somehow to become the central part of what people (focus on) is quite bizarre.”

“An unacceptable level” of threats.

University officials said the security move followed legal and police guidance amid what they called an “unacceptable level” of threats. It’s part of a wave of protests that began in November 2023.

“This isn’t happening everywhere,” Hubbard said. “This is happening at Michigan, at UCLA, at Columbia, at Harvard. I believe strongly we’re targeted by these groups in a coordinated way.”

Bernstein agreed, warning the climate has shifted.

“Dangerous, hateful rhetoric results in tragic consequences,” Bernstein said. “Beyond just the safety implications, it interferes with constructive engagement and renders it almost impossible. It is a disservice to their cause.”
