LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been a consistent critic of President Donald Trump and his tariffs on foreign countries.
In a recent video posted on Whitmer’s official governor’s X account, Whitmer has her head turned away from the camera while she says, “Republicans in Washington want to put blanket tariffs on our closest allies, skyrocketing costs for everyday small businesses just to get by. Tariffs will make your life more expensive. That is not OK.”
Then she turns around and faces the camera and looks around as if to feign not knowing who made the comment.
“Who said that?” Whitmer rhetorically asks.
When I hear imposing broad tariffs with no strategy, I hear Republicans in Washington refusing to listen to their constituents – jacking up prices for everyone. pic.twitter.com/lDnt7t9CeR

Then she adds, “In all seriousness, tariffs are making life harder for Americans and the continuing chaos is making it harder for business. It’s paralysis. We need a strategy to grow American manufacturing and to support American businesses so the American consumer can get ahead.”

Through July 20, Trump’s tariffs have brought in $104.7 billion. By comparison, tariffs brought in $48.3 billion at the same time in 2024, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center. That means revenues from tariffs have more than doubled since last year.
That extra revenue for the government does not come at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.
As of September 30, 2024, there was $28.3 trillion in debt held by the public, according to the U.S. Treasury. Interest payments on that debt cost $1.2 trillion in 2024, more than what the government spent on the military.
