LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Jennifer Crumbley, mother of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, wants her manslaughter convictions overturned, branding the case a “sham prosecution” in a new appeal.

A jury last year convicted her on four counts, finding she left a handgun accessible to her 15-year-old son, who used it to kill four classmates in 2021. Her husband, James, was convicted weeks later. Both parents are serving 10–15 years in prison, according to The Detroit News.

Her attorney, Michael Dezsi, argues the trial was riddled with errors and misconduct, while prosecutors maintain the parents ignored repeated red flags. “Opportunity knocked over and over again and was ignored,” Judge Cheryl Matthews said at sentencing.

The appeal insists Jennifer Crumbley had “no legal duty” to stop her son’s crimes and challenges the use of Ethan’s writings and text messages laying out his violent plans.

“There will be at least 10 more judges … and I’m confident that at some point in this process Mrs. Crumbley’s convictions will be thrown out,” Dezsi said.

The filing lands as two victims’ families accepted $500,000 settlements with Oxford schools, while two others refused.
