TROY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Like many school districts around the state, Troy Public Schools are looking to make the transition from diesel to electric buses.
However, the cost of the buses highlights a statewide issue as the newer technology comes at a price.

The Troy district will pay $828,210 for two electric buses that it stated would replace two diesel buses. The buses will be paid for by a grant provided by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
At a cost of $414,000 per electric bus, manufacturers of buses estimate the old-school traditional diesel buses cost between $105,000 to $150,000.
Okemos Public Schools in Ingham County said it cost $138,312 to purchase a traditional diesel school bus in 2024. In 2021, the district stated the traditional diesel bus had cost $97,000 in 2021.
The MDE’s Clean School Bus grant program awarded $125 million in 2025 to school districts to help them purchase renewable-power school buses.
