GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Grand Rapids is going to use drones to fly over the downtown area and take images so planners can evaluate parking capacity.

The Grand Rapids City Council recently reviewed plans of how the “unmanned aerial systems” would fly about 300 to 400 feet in the air over a three-week period. The city says it needs the technology to better prepare for parking needs once an amphitheater and soccer stadium are completed. The cost is expected to be $30,000.

The city said the vendor conducting the drone operations will “ensure that details such as license plates, vehicle identification numbers, bumper stickers, or other potentially identifiable features are not captured or retained.”

In addition, the city said its staff would only receive “aggregated, anonymized outputs, such as heat maps, occupancy counts, and utilization charts, which will be used exclusively to inform parking management and mobility planning.”
