HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Hamtramck police chief, city manager, a police officer and the sitting city council itself have all been involved in controversies that have made city government the laughing stock of the state.

The controversies included claims that the police chief drove intoxicated with lights and sirens with fellow officers to a strip bar in his city-owned vehicle as well as that city council members didn’t even live in the city and were stuffing the ballot boxed with illegal absentee ballots.

The latest events occurred this week when the city council fired Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, City Manager Max Garbarino and police officer David Adamczyk.

Altaheri was accused of handing a civilian a loaded gun and telling the civilian to point it at a person’s head. The police chief told investigators he was joking. Altaheri is also accused of drinking and driving to a strip club in his city vehicle and using his lights and sirens to get their quicker.

The city council’s behavior has also made headlines.

City Council Members Muhtasin Sadman and Mohammed Hassan face criminal charges for election fraud. They are accused of, among other things, forging signatures on absentee ballots.

City Council members Muhith Mahmood and Abu Musa are accused of living outside of Hamtramck and violating the city’s rules on residency to serve on the city council.

Musa was also captured on a video on Aug. 1 handing stacks of papers to the driver of a car he was in that appears to show them dumping absentee ballots into a ballot box. That story garnered national attention and was picked up by the New York Post.
