The federal government has filed lawsuits against sanctuary cities seeking to compel them to follow federal law. The Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against New York City. After the Justice Department threatened legal action against the city of Louisville in Kentucky, city officials revoked their sanctuary city policies, according to the Justice Department press release.
In January 2023, the city of East Lansing passed a resolution declaring itself a sanctuary city.
That resolution stated, “In February of 2017, the City of East Lansing City Council passed a resolution ‘reaffirm[ing]’ the City of East Lansing’s long-standing policy of refusal to participate with federal authorities in the widespread unjust violation of rights of individuals based on religion, national origin, immigration or refugee status.’ This Resolution declared the City of East Lansing as a ‘safe haven’, but not a ‘Sanctuary City.'”
The January 2023 resolution stated that the city of East Lansing “has a special relationship with immigrants because of the large number who come here to study, teach, research, work and create businesses.”
