LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — After seven years on the sidelines, tailgating is coming back to Munn Field—the grassy stretch next to Spartan Stadium long known as Michigan State University’s pregame hub—and this time with beer sales in the mix.
MSU athletics announced on August 25 that fans will again be allowed to park and tailgate on part of the field starting Aug. 29, when the Spartans open their season against Western Michigan. The reboot, called “The Munn Tailgate,” will feature food vendors, a 517 Beer Garden, and the neighboring Meijer Fan Fest, according to the Lansing State Journal.

“Gameday traditions, including tailgating and the pregame experience, are an important part of what makes Michigan State football gamedays special,” Athletic Director J Batt said in a statement.
The return, however, comes with limits: only athletic department parking passes will be honored, and all standard tailgating rules apply.
Munn’s past explains the caution. Not only were kegs banned in 1994 and alcohol in 1998—sparking a student riot and tear gas crackdown—but by 2018 the university shut down tailgating altogether.
