TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – One of the citizens who helped subdue the Traverse City Walmart stabbing suspect is asking for privacy after a whirlwind week of media attention.

Derrick Perry, who can be seen on viral social media videos using his concealed carry weapon to get the alleged attacker to drop the knife in the parking lot before law enforcement arrived, released a statement through the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

Perry said, “I am a proud citizen of Traverse City. I just wanted to do right by my community and help where there was a problem. I am just like any other member of the community. I wasn’t looking to be heroic; I just wanted to help my neighbors. I can’t take all the credit as there were other courageous individuals who were also standing up to the attacker, too. I appreciate the outpouring of thanks and love from the public.”

At this time, I’d like to ask that everyone, including the media, respect my privacy as well as my family’s privacy. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Grand Traverse County officials praise Perry.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office added, “he earned it!” when referring to Perry’s privacy requests.

As Perry mentioned, he wasn’t the only citizen willing to step in and keep the community safe. The Grand Travers County Sheriff’s Office sent out a thank you to people who sent law enforcement information, photographs, and video related to the stabbings.

“During this critical incident, numerous members of the public courageously stepped in to render aid to victims and assist first responders,” Grand Traverse County officials said. “The Detective Bureau commends these individuals for their bravery and selflessness.”

The ongoing investigation.

In addition, officials added the investigation continues. “We are seeking to identify and speak with any individuals who: provided first aid or assistance to the injured, witnessed any part of the incident,[or] have video footage or relevant information that may aid the investigation. The suspect in the stabbings, 42-year-old Bradford Gille of Cheboygan County, remains in jail on a $1 million bond. He will be back in court on Aug. 6.
