LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit) introduced a bill Friday that would end qualified immunity for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Currently, ICE agents are protected from civil liability unless people can prove that the agent violated their rights. H.R. 4944 would take away the legal immunity that protects agents from lawsuits alleging they violated a person’s rights.

“Trump gave ICE a bigger annual budget than the Italian military,” Thanedar said in a post on X. “This amount of money requires oversight, which is why I introduced a bill to strip ICE agents of their qualified immunity. Anyone should be able to pursue legal action against those who violate their rights.”

A recent press release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that there has been a 1000% increase in assaults against ICE agents.

“These acts of violence are fueled by sanctuary politicians’ rhetoric vilifying our law enforcement,” Secretary Kristi Noem said. “We will not and have not let this violence stop us or slow us down. Everyday our law enforcement continues to enforce the law and arrest the most depraved criminals including pedophiles, terrorists, murderers, gang members, and sexual predators.”
