LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In 2023, the Democrats in Michigan controlled the state House and Senate and also had the sitting governor for the first time in 40 years.
With free reign to have the votes to pass their agenda, Democrats repealed Michigan’s right-to-work law, becoming the first state to do that since Indiana repealed its right-to-work law in 1965.

It marked the first time the Democrats had control of the House, Senate and governorship since 1983.
Under Democratic rule, Democrats also repealed restrictions around abortion, added gender identity and sexual orientation to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and banned “conversion therapy” for minors.
But in 2025, the return of Donald Trump also let the Michigan Republicans regained control of the House.
GOP House Speaker Matt Hall posted Tuesday on X about his future plans and shared them with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). He attended a ALEC-organized trip to Texas and also attended ALEC’s annual meeting in Indianapolis.
Great to join @NotThatLars on @ALEC_states TV at their 52nd Annual Meeting to talk about keeping Michigan competitive by cutting waste, investing in infrastructure, and protecting our economy from the Senate Democrat’s reckless tax-and-spend agenda.#MILeg #MIPol https://t.co/njbsMsVspF

Hall told ALEC that with the GOP back in the game, they have revised the state’s paid sick leave law that protected workers and employers.

With the Republicans back in the mix, the divided government has not passed many bills.
“We’ve passed six bill into law this year,” Hall told ALEC. That’s the lowest since 1940, when the state Legislature didn’t meet, according to ALEC.
The focus for Hall is now to fix the roads without raising taxes. That’s been a goal of the Republicans for years.
