HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri was fired after a report stated he gave a loaded weapon to a civilian and told the civilian to point it at a person’s head and also drove intoxicated with other officers to a strip bar in his city-owned vehicle.

The firings.

The Hamtramck City Council fired its police chief, city manager Max Garbarino and officer David Adamczyk at its Aug. 26 meeting due to the fallout from the report by Miller Johnson Attorneys. The law firm said they reviewed more than 670,000 documents for the report.

The investigation concluded Altaheri drank alcohol at a party and then drove to a strip bar with other police officers in his city-owned vehicle on Sept. 19, 2024. While driving to the strip club, Altaheri put on his lights-and-sirens and drove erratically, according to the report. Multiple witnesses reported that Altaheri appeared intoxicated before driving.

Timecard fraud.

Later, Altaheri agreed to not fire a police officer who was believed to have committed timecard fraud if the officer deleted the reckless driving video he had of Altaheri driving to the strip club. The report said the officer was not fired but should have been for timecard fraud. Instead of the officer resigning, he was given a 30-day suspension, according to the report.

When he was placed on administrative leave, Altaheri violated a city policy by having a friend wipe his cell phone clean.

The report also stated that Altaheri pressured police officers to help him in a custody dispute with the mother of his 2-year-old son. The report said police were called to his residence via at least five 911 calls and Altaheri suggested police present him favorably in their report.

In addition, the report said that Altaheri handed a loaded firearm to a female civilian and told her to point it at someone’s head. The report said that Altaheri did not deny it because it was recorded on video but said it was a joke.

Officer Adamczyk was accused of using a video he took of Altaheri driving while drinking to the strip bar as leverage against the police chief. The report stated that Altaheri and Adamczyk also attempted to rig a sergeant’s promotion exam in Adamcyzk’s favor. The report stated that Adamczyk also submitted overtime for hours he did not work and mischaracterized the nature of his work.

“Poor judgement.”

The report also stated that “Garbarino exercised significant poor judgment in his role as City Manager and other instances in which his actions did not comport with his obligations under the Hamtramck City Charter, City policies, or supervisory expectations for his position.”
