LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — A forum meant to spotlight Lansing’s mayoral and city council hopefuls will not happen tomorrow after organizers pulled the event in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s murder.

The Lansing branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced it was scrapping its September 16th candidate forum at Union Missionary Baptist Church, citing safety concerns after Turning Point USA’s devout Christian founder was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.

Branch president Harold Pope said the violence in Utah raised red flags about putting local candidates on stage.

“After careful consideration, and in light of emerging safety concerns, we have made the difficult decision to cancel,” the group posted on Facebook.

According to USA Today, Pope said the branch may still host forums later—just not now.
