HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Hamtramck does not want to hoist the LGBTQ+ pride flag on city property, and a federal judge agrees.
U.S. District Judge David Lawson dismissed a lawsuit against the city of Hamtramck this week. The decision came two years after the city council voted to allow only five flags to fly on city property. Those included the American flag, the Michigan flag, and flags that “represent the international character” of the community.

“Hamtramck’s refusal to display the Gay Pride flag did not violate the Constitution,” Lawson said. Opponents argued that banning the flag was unconstitutional.
Two years prior to the vote, the city displayed the pride flag. The all-Muslim council banned that policy in 2023. Roughly 40% of Hamtramck’s 28,400 population is of Middle Eastern descent.
The city’s mayor, Amer Ghalib is a native of Yemen. President Donald Trump nominated him as U.S. ambassador to Kuwait.
