DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit has plans to spend more than $70 million this year as part of a transition of their older fleet of diesel buses to more environmentally friendly ones.

The Detroit City Council will review a $70.3 million spending plan to purchase 53 hybrid diesel electric buses as well as four hydrogen buses and electric charting infrastructure at its Sept. 2 meeting. The U.S. Department of Transportation will fund $59.7 million of that plan and the Michigan Department of Transportation will provide $10.6 million.

In 2024, the city received a $30.8 million grant from the federal government for the same purpose. That grant was used to replace 25 old diesel buses with new clean energy models, according to the city. The Michigan Department of Transportation included a $5 million match in 2024.

The Detroit Department of Transportation has 288 vehicles in its fleet. The transit agency provided 54.7 million in passenger miles traveled in 2023.
