WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Former Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook is under a criminal investigation brought by the U.S. Department of Justice in the wake of mortgage fraud allegations.

The investigation, which has issued subpoenas, comes after Cook sued President Donald Trump in federal court over what she called her “unlawful” firing on August 25. Among other things, the Federal Reserve is in charge of interest rates tied to mortgages.

Fraud allegations surfaced after Trump cabinet member Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Authority, linked Cook to several mortgages where she claimed primary residence in both Michigan and Georgia. A third property in Massachusetts has been reportedly tied to Cook as well.

Journalist Charlie LeDuff visited Cook’s Michigan property this week and found renters living there.

Cook, who denies the allegations, argues in her lawsuit that Trump’s firing of her undermines the Federal Reserve’s independent bureaucracy.
