CHARLEVOIX, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – John Haggard, a longtime Michigan Republican leader and 2016, 2020, and 2024 Trump elector, passed away Wednesday, September 10 at age 84 – the day after the criminal charges against him and 14 others were dismissed in court. Haggard had been charged by Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel with forgery and conspiracy charges tied to his role as one of Michigan’s “alternate electors” in the 2020 presidential election

Mary Chartier, Haggard’s attorney, has confirmed his passing and said she believed he died early Wednesday morning. Chartier told the Detroit News that he had suffered a heart attack on August 29 and was scheduled to have four stents inserted on Tuesday. It was also revealed that Haggard knew of his vindication in the case before he died.

The Charlevoix County Republicans released a statement mourning Haggard’s passing: “We are deeply saddened to have learned of John Haggard’s passing…John Haggard has been a pillar of our community, not only as a Republican, but in trade organizations and charities.”

They described him as a veteran, husband, father, presidential elector, national delegate, and state committeeman and a leader, a mentor and advocate. They went on to say, “He wore so many titles, and his legacy will live on in the history of our community. We send our deepest condolences to Phyllis and the entire family for this great loss.”

David Kallman of the Kallman Legal Group, who represented fellow defendant Hank Choate, criticized the years-long case, telling Michigan News Source, “It’s sad that he had to face this type of legal persecution right up to the day he died.”
