LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Michigan residents aren’t shy about taking a chance on luck. A new LendingTree analysis shows the average Michigander spent $468 on lottery tickets in 2023, well above the national average of $320 and enough to rank the state seventh nationwide.
The report found Americans spent nearly $109 billion on lottery tickets in 2023, a 3.6% jump from 2022. Massachusetts topped the charts at a staggering $915 per person, with Rhode Island ($573) and Virginia ($532) trailing behind. At the other end, North Dakotans wagered just $50.

In Michigan, spending held steady compared to 2022, inching up by just 0.2%. Even so, that modest growth was enough to keep the state in the top ten among the nation’s most lottery-obsessed.
LendingTree analysts noted that while jackpots can skew the numbers—with billion-dollar wins boosting per-capita averages—the steady stream of players keeps states like Michigan among the heaviest users of scratch-offs and Powerball tickets.
