HOUGHTON, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A Michigan Tech student is facing misdemeanor charges, a possible fine, and up to one year in jail after officials said she stole from the school’s 9/11 memorial.
Twenty-one-year-old Avery Lawrence pleaded not guilty to taking 900 American flags and causing $200 to $1,000 in damage to the annual 9/11 memorial on campus two weeks ago.

Young Americans for Freedom Chapter President Donald Chapman told WLUC he’s confused about the perpetrator’s motivation.
“It’s really not especially political at all,” Chapman told the Upper Peninsula television station. “We just have American flags out here and we’re just commemorating a national tragedy in which American citizens died.”
The judge ordered a $300 bond; Lawrence is due back in court on Oct. 20.
