LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Starting this October, parents will receive alerts about Michigan’s secure storage of firearms law from the school district their children attend.
That’s according to the law Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed that mandates starting Oct. 1 (and every year thereafter), the school districts distribute information to the parent or legal guardian of each student enrolled in the district.

Birmingham Public Schools approved the new policy at its Sept. 16 board meeting.
Public Act 17 of 2023 “requires individuals to keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be present on the premises,” according to the state of Michigan. The law went into effect Feb. 13, 2024.
The law makes it a misdemeanor if a minor possesses or exhibits a gun in a public place in a “careless, reckless or threatening manner.” If a minor discharges the firearm and injures themselves or another individual, it is a felony.
