LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan House proposed budget contains provisions that will crack down on the hiring of illegal aliens as well as the spending of state and federal money on non-U.S. citizens.

The House budget would require departments and agencies make sure that contractors and subcontractors use the E-Verify system that all persons hired are legally authorized to work in this country.

The state already requires public-sector employees hired go through the E-Verify system. This budget would extend that to private companies hired by the state.

E-Verify is an internet-based system that compares the information provided by the employer on an employee to records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to make sure an applicant is authorized to work in the U.S.

The budget would also prohibit state and federal funding from being used on grants, programming or services for non-U.S. citizens with the exception of qualified aliens. It also allows public entities to spend money to detain people who are not citizens of the U.S.
