GRAND BLANC, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Police said they found two bodies in the charred remains of a Genesee County church after a gunman opened fire on Sunday morning during its services, leaving four dead and sending eight more to the hospital in various conditions.

The update regarding the shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came just after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday night. Law enforcement identified the shooter as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton. Responding officers shot him dead at the scene.

In addition, officials said Sanford used an accelerant to set a fire. Police found two victims in the ashes. The church is a total loss.

Law enforcement at the press conference, which included the Grand Blanc Police Department, FBI, Genesee County Sheriff’s deputies, and the Michigan State Police, gave praise to both first responders and parishioners inside the church. They said church members shielded children from Sanford’s vehicle ramming into the building and the violence; also, police were on the scene within 30 seconds of the gunman’s arrival and neutralized the scene within eight minutes.

Police are still investigating a motive as well as other suspected bomb threats in the area.
