DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A former Detroit bus driver involved in a deadly crash that killed a 67-year-old woman in 2023 had also struck and killed another pedestrian years earlier, according to city records. Despite the earlier fatal crash, Johnson remained employed by the city until the second deadly incident in 2023 finally ended her tenure behind the wheel.
According to a recent Associated Press report, the Detroit City Council agreed to pay nearly $6 million to the family of Janice Bauer, who was killed in 2023 when the driver hit her as she crossed the street. Geraldine Johnson, the bus driver, received a six-month jail sentence last year after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge of moving violation causing death.

Johnson, had been involved in 18 other accidents during her tenure. Officials now face growing criticism over how she was allowed to continue driving despite repeated red flags.
The 2015 death of pedestrian Joey Davis, who was struck and killed by the bus driver, resulted in a $4.5 million settlement paid by the city.
Detroit’s transportation department has been reviewing its safety and oversight procedures since the 2023 incident. But for Bauer’s family – and the families of others impacted – the review comes far too late.
