DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan News Source) A new wheelchair-friendly merry-go-round and play tower headline Detroit’s $2.9 million Spirit Plaza upgrade, part of the city’s push to make downtown more “inclusive” for all ages and abilities.

“We want to make sure there are ways to play and have fun for our children who may have some physical challenges,” Crystal Perkins, director of Detroit’s General Services Department, told The Detroit News.

The overhaul also includes a covered 26-foot stage, new turf, planters doubling as barriers, and rearranged seating areas. City records show Detroit-based Michigan Recreation Construction will lead the work, with completion targeted for the 2026 festival season.

First launched in 2017 as a temporary plaza on Woodward Avenue, Spirit Plaza became a permanent fixture in downtown Detroit two years later and now hosts everything from yoga sessions to live concerts.
