The city plans to spend $2.69 million to add 220 beds to Cass Community Social Services on Rosa Parks Boulevard. That money covers a seven-month period and pushes the total contract to $6.2 million if approved.

In addition, the city is reviewing a $420,000 contract for homeless support outreach for Motor City Mitten Mission, located in St. Clair Shores that also serves the Detroit area.

Both plans are on the agenda for the Oct. 28 city council meeting.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan vowed to spend more money addressing homelessness in February after two children died while staying in a van in a garage of a casino in the city during freezing temperatures. Darnell Currie, Jr. and A’Millah Currie died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Duggan released a seven-point plan in February for improving the city’s response to city residents living on the streets.
