WAYNE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Fewer babies may soon be born in the city of Wayne.

On Oct. 21, Corewell Health confirmed it’s weighing the closure of the labor and delivery unit at its Wayne hospital, pointing to a steady decline in local births.

“In the Wayne and surrounding communities, we are finding parents are choosing to deliver their babies at our nearby sites, such as Dearborn,” Corewell spokesperson Mark Geary said, noting those hospitals offer “more comprehensive labor and delivery programs.”

The hospital, once part of the old Beaumont and Oakwood healthcare systems, has served Wayne County families for decades. Certain lawmakers, however, say pulling maternity care from the area would leave mothers with fewer options.

U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor), in particular, have urged Corewell to reconsider, calling the unit “a critical provider of obstetrical and gynecological services.”

Corewell did not indicate whether a closure would mean layoffs but said it remains committed to providing OBGYN care “regardless of where patients deliver their baby.”
