LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The city of Lansing recently passed a resolution declaring it to be a “LGBTQ+ Welcoming City” and states that it supports “any person” seeking or providing gender-affirming treatment.

The resolution, passed on Oct. 13, states: “the Lansing City Council supports the right of transgender and gender diverse individuals to access gender-affirming care safely and without interference, and encourages the Administration to issue an executive order safeguarding access to such care, including prohibiting the use of City resources to block, investigate, prosecute, or detain any person seeking or providing gender-affirming treatment.”

The term “any person” does not exclude children.

President Donald Trump has issued executive orders that would take away federal funding for providers of gender-affirming medical care for people under 19, according to the ACLU.

KFF, formerly the Kaiser Family Foundation, reported that 27 states have some sort of legislation restricting gender affirming care for children. Michigan has no restrictions. There are 24 states that impose professional or legal penalties on health care practitioners providing minors with gender affirming care, according to KFF.

The Lansing City Council encourages the city administration to appoint LGBTQ+ members to boards and implement LGBTQ+ policies.

“The Lansing City Council encourages the City Administration and its departments to develop and implement pro-LGBTQ+ support policies, to ensure that existing business assistance programs are inclusive of and accessible to LGBTQ+- affirming businesses, and to appoint LGBTQ+ community members to City boards and commissions or establish an LGBTQ+ advisory board to ensure representation and inclusion in civic decision-making,” the resolution states.

The resolution claims, without documentation, that “threats against Lansing’s LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ-supportive businesses have been on the rise, fueled by harmful rhetoric at the state and federal levels that emboldens bigotry, intimidation, and vandalism, causing emotional harm, property damage, and economic loss.”
