LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) The books didn’t balance at Lawton Community Schools, and now one former clerk is facing a felony over it.

Andria Rice-Keister, a former bookkeeper for the district, was formally charged Oct. 24 with embezzling between $50,000 and $100,000, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, according to police.

Lawton Police began investigating after the district reported missing funds in September. The case was later referred to the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office, according to WOODTV.com.

Superintendent Ben Bandfield called the discovery a blow to community trust.

“As a taxpayer, community member and father of three Lawton students, I know how hard people work for every dollar that supports our schools, and it’s frustrating to see that trust broken,” Bandfield said.

Bandfield added that the district has recovered all but $2,500 of the missing money and has tightened its financial controls to prevent another breach.

“While we are limited in what we can share due to the legal process and personnel privacy laws, we want to assure our community that we are taking this matter very seriously,” the school district said in a statement.
