LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan drivers woke up to a welcome surprise at the gas pumps on Monday morning.
AAA Michigan reports that gas prices plunged 16 cents in the past week, which means prices are now well below $3.00 per gallon across much of the state.

The new low for 2025 is hovering around $2.90 for a gallon of regular unleaded. That price is 16 cents less than a month ago and 37 cents less than one year ago. AAA says that averages around $43 to fill up a 15-gallon tank of gasoline.
Declining prices are also taking place nationwide. The trend of declining prices is continuing nationally as well. U.S gas stations are averaging $3.02 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.
“Americans appear to be on the cusp of seeing the national average drop below $3 per gallon and potentially stay there for the first time in years, as prices have fallen across the vast majority of the country,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With well over 40 states seeing gas prices decline and oil plunging below $60 per barrel to end the week, the good news may not end if — and when — the national average hits that magical $2.99 mark. In addition, with wages up and gas prices down, Americans are spending the smallest share of their paycheck on gasoline in many years,” De Haan said.
In addition, GasBuddy reports that oil prices “plunged below $60 late last week after President Trump threatened China with crippling new tariffs in response to China limiting the export of rare earths.” Couple that with OPEC’s continued production and consumers could see lower prices as a part of a new lifestyle moving forward.
