LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Michigan State University (MSU) is backing off its ambitious plans for a 14-acre mixed-use development that once promised a new $150 million Olympic sports arena.
The Board of Trustees will vote on Friday, Oct. 31 on the revision, which reimagines the 14-acre development first approved in April. Athletic Director J. Batt, Senior Adviser Harold Balk, and Infrastructure Vice President Daniel Bollman said the new proposal reflects “evolving facility needs in Athletics” and a scale “more appropriate for for the location.”

The pared-down plan would still include retail, dining, and housing but drop the Olympic arena entirely. Existing facilities such as Jenison Field House and Munn Ice Arena would continue to host Olympic sports, with possible upgrades under consideration.
If approved, MSU will reopen the project for new developer bids. Previous partners Gillespie Group and Goldenrod Companies would have to reapply.
The updated project will also keep MSU’s financial footprint minimal, relying largely on private donations and the university’s general fund. Planning would draw input from multiple campus units, including Athletics, Student Affairs, and Infrastructure Planning, to ensure the scaled-back vision fits the university’s long-term needs.
