DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The Detroit City Council is supporting a federal bill submitted by Michigan U.S. Democrat Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib that would hike the cost of music streaming music subscriptions such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon so more money could go to the musicians.
Tlaib’s Sept. 29 press release stated her legislation would add “a small fee to the price of music streaming subscriptions.” The language of the 2025 bill named the Living Wage for Musicians Act called for a 50% hike in music streaming subscriptions.

The website CompleteMusicUpdated stated that 50% tax would increase a Spotify subscription from its current $11.99 a month to $17.99 a month.
The extra money from the tax would create a fund administered by a nonprofit organization that would pay artists.
The city of Detroit said it is home to 6,000 working musicians. The Detroit city council will vote on the resolution at its Oct. 21 meeting.
According to a press release put out by Tlaib, royalties for musicians are as little as $0.0033 per stream. The press release stated it would take 800,000 monthly streams to equal a $15-an-hour full-time job at the $0.0033 rate – or $2,648.
