ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Ann Arbor City Council approved spending as much as $57,500 to purchase a Ford F-150 Lightning, the electric truck once described by the car company’s CEO Jim Farley as “a smart phone that can tow.”

For more than 25 years, Ann Arbor has boasted a “Green Fleets” policy. In 2024, the city announced that 25% of its light-duty fleet were electric. Ultimately, the city’s goal is to have an all-electric fleet.

According to Michigan Capitol Confidential, Ann Arbor owns or leases more electric vehicles than any other city in the state. It has 29 Ford F-150 Lightning trucks.

However, on the same day the City Council approved it spending plan, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ford is considering cancelling production of its F-150 EV truck. The outlook for EVs has been in question since the $7,500 EV tax credit ended on Sept. 30 and the Wall Street Journal reported Ford has lost $13 billion on electric vehicles since 2023.

The Wired website reported in July that car companies have either cancelled or delayed 14 models of EVs since 2024.
