LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Tesla’s home backup batteries were built to weather blackouts, not create their own.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 10,500 Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power Systems sold from late 2020 through the end of 2022 contain a faulty lithium-ion cell that can fail during ordinary use. Tesla reported 22 overheating cases, including six instances of smoke and five small fires, all confined to minor property damage.

The company says a faulty battery cell from an unidentified supplier is to blame, with the issue limited to Powerwall 2 units. Australia issued a matching recall earlier this fall.

Notably, most impacted batteries have already been remotely discharged through the Tesla app, which alerts users if their system has been disabled.

Tesla pledges free replacements for every faulty unit, and homeowners’ solar panels will keep operating while the units remain offline.
