LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A major name in the soup aisle is now part of Michigan’s lab-grown meat debate, and some lawmakers in Lansing are calling for clear labeling on products.

The soup mainstay fired a Michigan executive after he trashed the company and its customers on a recording, implying the company used “bioengineered meat.”

State Rep. Jerry Neyer (R-Sheperd) wants the Senate to take action on House Bill 4076 which requires clear labeling for products manufactured using lab-grown meat. He outlined his plan on The Steve Gruber Show on Friday.

“There’s a disconnect between the folks in the boardroom making these statements and they’re not aware of what’s going on at the processing facilities,” Rep. Neyer told Gruber. Neyer said the requirements in his bill requirements would protect both consumers and businesses “to ensure everyone knows the rules and exactly what’s in their food.”

Earlier this week, Neyer address the comments by the Campbell’s employee, saying whether the claims are true or false isn’t the whole problem. “Without strict lab-grown meat labeling requirements like I’ve proposed, companies of any size could be cutting corners or putting bioengineered ingredients into our food without any transparency to the public.”

Neyer added that labeling requirements ensure consumers will know if “the chicken they’re buying is from a farm or a lab.”
