WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-Michigan) filed articles of impeachment against Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, saying his orders over the Sept. 2, 2025 boat strike have risen to the “level of war crimes.”
Democrats in Congress, including U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan), are upset that the military has been involved in actions involving drug boats headed to the U.S. and killing those on board. In addition, they claim Hegseth ordered two stranded survivors in the ocean to be killed.

Rep. Thanedar announced the articles of impeachment on X, incorrectly referring to Hegseth as “Secretary of Defense.”

Secretary Hegseth pushed back in a statement on X. He said, “These highly effective strikes are specifically intended to be “lethal, kinetic strikes. The Biden administration preferred the kid gloves approach, allowing millions of people — including dangerous cartels and unvetted Afghans — to flood our communities with drugs and violence. The Trump administration has sealed the border and gone on offense against narco-terrorists. Biden coddled terrorists, we kill them.”
He continued, “Our current operations in the Caribbean are lawful under both U.S. and international law, with all actions in compliance with the law of armed conflict—and approved by the best military and civilian lawyers, up and down the chain of command.
