LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — Michigan drivers may love to hate on other Michigan drivers, but a new report found that the drivers here are the best in the nation.

LendingTree, an online loan marketplace, released an analysis on car insurance data from across the country, using data from January to September 2025, and found that Michigan is the state with the least number of car incidents overall, at 20.9 incidents per 1,000 drivers. In contrast, North Dakota had the most number of incidents at 64.0 incidents per 1,000 drivers.

The report also ranked states in three sub-categories: car accidents, DUIs, and speeding-related incidents.

Michigan beat all other states with the lowest car accident rate of 10 per 1,000 people, and ranked 40th in the number of speeding incidents at 1.9 incidents per 1,000 people. But Michigan lagged in DUIs — the state has the 18th-highest DUI rate at 1.6 DUIs per 1,000 drivers.

The three states with the worst drivers are North Dakota, New Jersey, and Utah.
