LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A newly released report by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel reveals decades of alleged sexual abuse and misconduct within the Diocese of Grand Rapids.
The 336-page report compiles seven years of information collected from victim interviews, police investigations, diocesan records, and a tip line operated by the Attorney General’s office.

In addition, the list includes 51 priests with allegations of abuse against minors or adults since 1950. Thirty-eight were ordained by the diocese. Many cases cannot be criminally prosecuted due to statutes of limitations, death of the accused, or other legal constraints.
“Accountability does not end with criminal prosecution,” Nessel said. “Accountability includes transparency, acknowledgement and a commitment to believing in and supporting victims. No matter how much time has passed, survivors deserve to be heard, and by releasing these reports, we hope to honor the courage of victims and ensure their experiences are no longer hidden,” she said.
The most recent report is the fifth in seven planned reports on Michigan dioceses following releases in 2022 (Marquette) and 2024 (Gaylord, Kalamazoo, and Lansing).
The ongoing saga started in 2018 when law enforcement seized more than 220 boxes of documents and 3.5 million digital files during investigations of all seven dioceses.
