ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The University of Michigan has a new head football coach.

UM Athletic Director Warde Manuel made the announcement late on Friday night. This makes Whittingham the 22nd head football coach in the Wolverines’ 146-year history of the program.

Whittingham’s five-year contract runs through the 2030 season.

The 66-year-old Whittingham comes to Ann Arbor after finishing his 21st season as Utah’s head coach in 2025. He’s been a member of the coaching staff since 1994.

“Kyle Whittingham is a well-respected and highly successful head coach who is widely recognized as a leader of exceptional character and principled leadership,” said Manuel. “Throughout our search, he consistently demonstrated the qualities we value at Michigan: vision, resilience, and the ability to build and sustain championship-caliber teams.”

The “exceptional character” of Whittingham will be a great strength to the UM program after it fired former head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month. The university fired Moore with cause after officials discovered a years-long affair with a staffer. Moore is now facing a felony charge along with two misdemeanors for allegedly breaking into the woman’s home after his firing and threatening to kill himself with her butter knives.
