LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) — For many Michigan teens, the hardest part of learning to drive isn’t parallel parking—it’s paying for driver’s education.
After a visit to Fordson High School in Dearborn, one of the few schools still offering driver’s education on campus, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is backing policy changes aimed at bringing school-based driver training back to more districts.

Private driver’s education can run about $650 just for the first segment—a price Benson says has pushed licensure out of reach for some teens and families.
The proposal also includes a $5 million funding request aimed at sustaining current programs in Dearborn and Wayne-Westland and expanding school-based driver’s education across Michigan.
“Driver’s education is not just a rite of passage for teenagers,” Benson said. “It’s an open door to jobs, sports, activities, and independence.”
